This Cookie Policy explains what cookies are, the types of cookies we use, and how we use them in a privacy-conscious manner. It also outlines how you can manage or withdraw your consent at any time.

What are cookies?

A cookie is a small text file that a website stores on your computer or mobile device when you visit the site. Cookies serve various purposes, such as remembering your preferences or recognising you on subsequent visits.

  • First-party cookies – Cookies set by the website you are visiting. Only that website can read these cookies.
  • Third-party cookies – Cookies set by external services or websites that the site you are visiting uses.
  • Session cookies – Temporary cookies that are erased when you close your browser. These cookies allow websites to recognise and link your actions during a single browsing session.
  • Persistent cookies – Cookies that remain on your device for a defined period of time or until you delete them. Persistent cookies enable a website to remember your preferences or actions across multiple visits, not just within a single session.

Most websites use cookies to function efficiently and to provide information to site owners. The first time you visit this website, you will be prompted to accept or refuse cookies, ensuring that non-essential cookies are only placed if you consent. Enabling cookies is not strictly necessary for the site to function, but it will improve your browsing experience. Cookies can also help us compile anonymised statistics about how users navigate our site, allowing us to improve our content and services

How we use cookies on the CEDAR website

The cookies on CEDAR are both first-party cookies, meaning they are set by the CEDAR website itself and are:

1) Visitor Preference cookies: These are strictly necessary cookies used to remember your choice regarding cookies. These preference cookies are considered essential for complying with your choices; they do not track you or store personal information. They simply store a value indicating whether you consented or not, and are used solely to avoid repeatedly asking for your consent within the 3-month period.

In CEDAR, you can find:

  • agreed – (Cookie Consent Kit service): Remembers your decision to accept or decline cookies, so that the site does not ask you on every visit. Type & Duration: First-party persistent cookie, stored for 3 months.
  • cookie-agreed-version – (Cookie Consent Kit service): Remembers the version of the cookie policy consent you’ve seen, to ensure you are prompted again only when the policy changes or after a set time. Type & Duration: First-party persistent cookie, 3 months

2) Analytics cookies: These cookies are used only with your consent and help us analyse how visitors use our website to improve it for all users. For analytics, we use Matomo, an open-source and GDPR-compliant web analytics tool. The Matomo cookies used are:

  • _pk_id# – a persistent cookie that identifies unique visitors (in an anonymised way). This cookie helps us recognise when the same user returns to the site, without revealing who that user is. It expires after 13 months.
  • _pk_ses# – a short-lived cookie that tracks a user's page views during a single visit (session). It expires after 30 minutes of inactivity.

These cookies are used only with your consent and help us conduct internal research on how visitors use our website, so we can improve it for all users. All analytics information is collected in an anonymous form. This means that it does not identify you as an individual. We do not share any personally identifying information with third parties or use it for any purpose other than improving our website. However, we may share aggregated, anonymised usage statistics with the CEDAR project partners or with the European Commission for project reporting purposes

Managing or withdrawing your consent

You have full control over how we use cookies on your device. When you first visit our site, you will see a cookie consent banner where you can choose to Accept or Decline analytics cookies. Your choice will be remembered as described above. If you accept and later change your mind, you can withdraw your consent at any time. To do so, you can either:

  • Use our site’s cookie settings tool: There will be an option to revisit your cookie preferences. By using this, you can modify your consent decision (e.g., withdraw consent so that analytics cookies are disabled and removed).
  • Use your browser settings: Most web browsers allow you to view, delete, or block cookies. You can delete CEDAR’s cookies or configure your browser to reject cookies from our site. If you remove cookies or block them, our site will treat you as a new visitor and will prompt you again for your cookie preferences.

We make it as easy to withdraw consent as to give it. If you refuse or disable analytics cookies, your site experience will not be significantly affected. The only drawback is that we won’t remember your preference unless a small cookie is set, so you may see the cookie consent prompt more often.

For more information on how we handle personal data and your rights, please see our Privacy Notice (which covers broader data protection practices beyond cookies). If you have any questions about this Cookie Policy or how CEDAR uses cookies, please contact us at the email address provided.

By using the CEDAR website and accepting certain cookies, you acknowledge that you have been informed about our use of cookies and that you consent to it as outlined here. We are committed to protecting your privacy and ensuring that any data collected through cookies is handled safely and responsibly.
